Restore Portal Options

Updated on March 19, 2025

VMOBACKUP offers three primary methods for recovering Microsoft 365 data. Each method has unique advantages and limitations:

  • VMOBACKUP ADV Restore Portal – Advanced recovery for system administrators and MSPs, allowing multi-tenant access and flexible restore options.
  • Veeam Restore Portal – Simple, user-friendly, and enables end-user self-service restores.
  • Veeam Explorer – A more advanced but complex option requiring local Veeam installation for detailed search and indexing.

VMOBACKUP ADV Restore Portal #

The VMOBACKUP ADV Restore Portal (ADV stands for Advanced) is the most powerful and flexible recovery option for system administrators and Managed Service Providers (MSPs) managing multiple clients.

Key Features:

  • Multi-tenant access – View and restore data across multiple clients.
  • Flexible recovery options – Restore data to its original location or export emails as PST and MSG files.
  • OneDrive and SharePoint recovery – Restore individual files and SharePoint items.
  • Redirected restores – Restore data within a tenant to different users or locations.

Best Use Case:

Ideal for MSPs and IT administrators who require full access to their backup data across multiple clients. Due to the high level of access, only trusted administrators should be granted access to the VMOBACKUP ADV Restore Portal.

Veeam Restore Portal #

The Veeam Restore Portal is a web-based recovery tool provided by Veeam and integrated into VMOBACKUP for self-service restores.

Key Features:

  • Allows end users to securely restore their own data.
  • Restores only to the original location.
  • Provides a simple, easy-to-use interface.

Best Use Case:

Recommended for organizations that want to empower end users with self-service recovery. The portal URL can be shared with users, reducing the need for IT support while maintaining security.

Veeam Explorer #

Veeam Explorer offers the most advanced recovery capabilities but requires local installation of Veeam Backup & Replication.

Key Features:

  • Requires on-site installation of Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • Provides granular search and indexing for finding specific data.
  • Features a Windows-based GUI for a more interactive experience.
  • Supports only one tenant at a time in multi-tenant environments.

Best Use Case:

Use this method only if the other restore options do not meet your needs. VMOBACKUP must enable your tenant for cloud repository access before use. While setup is complex, once configured, it becomes a powerful long-term recovery tool.
